Photographer and artist Mella Travers founded The Darkroom in 2010. Over the years it has grown into one of Dublin’s largest independently run Black and White Darkrooms. The ethos of The Darkroom is to provide open access to the facilities, keeping analogue photography, processes and printing firmly on the cultural map of Dublin.

At the beginning of 2016 Mella Travers with the help of Darragh Sinnott ‘photographer and entrepreneur moved the darkroom to a new location in Stoneybatter, thus began a new era in the History of The Darkroom. Louis Haugh sharing the new space is a ‘Photographer, Artist, who specialises in alternative processes and is now manager of the only in-house alternative darkroom in the whole of Ireland.
Now in a newly refurbished dedicated space to all things photography, it has been exciting times and within the History of The Darkroom.

Building this new facility we have extended the Darkrooms we now have 2, one very large darkroom housing 8 enlarger’s, large sinks, separate film processing and Dryer area. Suitable for film format from 35mm to 5X4 negatives. The second darkroom is the only in-house Alternative Processing darkroom in Ireland, with an expert on hand. also houses a large 10X8 format enlarger.

The Darkroom provides affordable courses in all areas of photography from Analogue to Digital in stills and moving images, from Beginners class to Masterclass workshops. Affordable rental of our darkrooms for private and group’s printing, photography studio with a plethora of lights and equipment as well as professional expertise.

Whether you’re completely new to the world of photography, an experienced amateur or a professional looking to brush up on or expand your skills, whether its analogue or digital that takes your fancy, The Darkroom has a course for you. We now have a large photography studio and teaching area which we rent and where we will be holding events from photo talks, exhibitions to screenings, keep an eye out.

All our courses are taught by tutors with extensive experience working professionally in their respective fields of expertise, using practical and hands-on demonstration, practice and tuition. We aim to have students leaving our courses feeling confident in their newly developed abilities, and we do our very best to ensure that they thoroughly enjoy their experience with us.
